MES – Traceability and Genealogy of Goods
TRACEABILITY & GENEALOGY MODULE
You have complete traceability and easily obtain quality & control in production
The Traceability & Product Genealogy module, available in the MES software solution, allows the identification of product batches and their relationship with batches of raw materials, packaging or other materials that are directly related to the finished products.
Based on batch numbers, the system identifies the entire product route, while also providing relevant data, such as the raw materials used in their production, information about suppliers and others. In addition:
- Successfully covers product tracking & tracing operations
- Traceability is achieved bidirectionally (forward traceability and backward traceability)
- You can manage material requests, transfer requests and return requests in an optimized way
BENEFITS OF THE TRACEABILITY & GENEALOGY MODULE

- Genealogy of batch and serial numbers
- Automatic identification of batch and serial numbers
TYPES OF TRACEABILITY COVERED BY MES
Get complete traceability in production with a single system
The MES (Manufacturing Execution System) system offers advanced traceability solutions, covering all the essential aspects for the efficient management of production processes. It allows you to track and analyze the route of products through various stages of the manufacturing process, providing a complete and detailed picture.
- Backward traceability
- Forward traceability
- Logistic traceability
- Internal traceability
- Tracking & Tracing

Backward traceability
Also known as backward traceability, backward traceability shows the reverse path, from the final consumer / customer to the manufacturing process. Thus, within the module, a product can be traced back to identify its origin and characteristics.
Forward traceability
Forward traceability allows you to see the chronological path of a product, starting from the manufacturing processes and ending with the consumer/client. In this way, within the system you can see the stages that a product will follow until it reaches the final consumer.
Accounting information tracking
Logistics traceability provides the user with accounting data, such as information on quantitative compliance, data on suppliers, beneficiaries, etc. All this information is available in the system, with access to the data being achieved with a simple click. The information can be used both for preparing accounting reports and for any other operations that require the analysis of such data.
Operational traceability
Internal traceability refers to the processes through which products have passed, targeting information about the operations in which the goods have been involved. The types of operations that are taken into account in this traceability category refer to processes that involve movement such as transportation, processing, preservation, destruction, etc.Monitoring and location
Through track and trace (forward and backward tracking) it is possible to view details about the location of products throughout the production stages. Tracking refers to the ability to locate a product based on specific criteria, and tracing refers to the ability to identify the origin and characteristics of a product based on a set of uniformly established criteria.WORKFLOWS RELATED TO THE MATERIALS MANAGEMENT MODULE
Integrating Traceability and Genealogy of Products into Production
Lot Allocation for Production
Once the raw material lots are identified and put into storage, with the help of the Traceability & Genealogy Module, you can use them in production to generate the next batch of semi-finished products / finished products. The user can allocate the lot to the machine that is to be used in order processing. Combining the capabilities with those of the Materials Management Module, a transfer order can be generated (either manually or automatically) so that the materials are brought to the machine in question.
How is the allocation of batches to machines & generation of material requests carried out?
From the workstation, the operator visualizes which materials are required for the work order, having permanent access to updated data on the available / required quantities. Next, the operator allocates the available materials to the machines, and if these are not available, a request for the necessary materials will be generated from the system, MES displaying only the BoM codes that correspond to the order.
Next, the transfer order is generated and the materials are transported from the warehouse to the machine. The same workflow is valid for manually carried out material requests, tracking consumption and the progress of production processes. Once the batches have been allocated to the machine, the quantity of the batch allocated to the machine can be tracked in real time on the workstation dashboard.
How is batch production and material flow monitoring carried out?
During production, the system automatically consumes batches of materials allocated to machines and generates identification numbers for the batches produced, the information being monitored in real time in MES. By implementing an Electronic Kanban System on the machine (with performances that are amplified by the Traceability Module), the consumption of batches allocated to the machine for the production of new batches can be observed.
Information about what was used and what was produced is tracked in a dashboard, directly from the workstation, the list of batches being displayed by category. Thus, data about the amount of materials needed to complete a work order and the amount on the machine are constantly updated depending on the production progress. Also, to prevent a machine stop due to lack of materials, the following can be generated: alerts & notifications; requests for materials / transfer orders (either to warehouse workers or to warehouse management systems).
What categories of information are monitored in production?
The system has the ability to monitor all relevant information for production ensuring traceability of origin and batches in an optimized way to increase production performance. When it comes to allocating materials to machines and producing a particular batch, the system can monitor and manage the following categories of information:
• Made from – all batch identification numbers that were used to produce the respective batch
• Used in – all batch identification numbers, produced with that batch
• Batch genealogy – exposed in an intuitive graphical representation that offers a user-friendly way of accessing and easy visualization of data
• Work order genealogy – in the case of a work order, access is provided to a graphical representation in which all batches used and produced on that work order are displayed
How are material returns handled?
The system allows the return of unused material from the machine to the warehouse and the updating of stock levels. Within the module, there is a dedicated workflow for this operation for the return of materials. After activating this workflow, the unused materials are returned to the warehouse, to the location where they originally came from, and the stock level in the warehouse increases by the amount specified in the return operation, the stock updating occurring immediately.
